Sick of Protective Styling

So I am 5 weeks post relaxer and I'm at the point where I am sick of braids, twists, buns and so-forth. BUT I know for maximum retention, I need to keep my ends protected and I really only need to do this for another 3 months.
I was thinking about getting some half wigs..but to be honest with you, wigs and weaves just aren't my thing. I must admit I wore weaves in the past..usually curly in the back and cornrowed in the front..But I just don't like them on ME anymore.
I took out my twists last night and was going to just wear a bun today...but my hair felt so greasy that I had to co-wash then do an Apple Cidar Vinegar Rinse.
I ended up air-drying in 6 braids..so I wore the braid-out for today and it feels good having my hair down!

I was going to do another set of Cornrows, but I think my edges need a break so I may just wait another week to do that. But then again...I may just change my mind! I'm sure I will get out of this rut soon.

Hair Update : Length Check September 2011

Blessings and love beauties!!

It's that time of the year again where it's time to discover my progress regarding length retention.

I am presently thinking about making a length check t-shirt so that it will be much easier for me to note down my progress. Here is a very useful post on Natural Hair Community on how to make one.

Here are the pictures taken :

Here is a comparison picture from my last length check two months ago :

I am currently at APL (armpit length) and so far, I am retaining a good amount of length.

Check out my goals concerning my length retention in this post.

By the grace of God, I continue to retain so much length and attain my goals!!

Do you do length checks?
How would you describe your overall length retention pattern been?

Hair Update : Time Flies

Blessings and love beauties and gents!!

Since I've been on a sort of hiatus for these past few days, I thought it right to update you all concerning my hair.

Since I started my Healthy Hair Challenge 2011-2012, I've been wearing lazy styles such as buns, updos, roll & tuck styles, twists, twist outs (only far one day at a time). I have really been employing as little time as possible on my hair. I normally start my week with a twist out then wear updos and buns for the rest of the week before wash day and then the cycle repeats itself.
Generally, I am loving what my hair is doing and I believe this is all down to my new hair regimen. I really give glory to God that, though it has taken 2 years, I now have a hair regimen that works 100% - no strings attached. Breakage has been minimum and my protein - moisture balance has been stable.

The name of this post is Time Flies because I cannot believe just how fast time has gone by. Wasn't it yesterday that we started Summer? Wasn't it yesterday that September began? Now October is just around the corner and the year is nearly over. I give all the glory to God and Him alone! Today, I thought back to how I used to be, how things used to be and I just could not believe God has been so good and has so much for me. I pray we finish this year safely and with all our expectations met. For those that might be looking up to God for one thing or the other, I truly encourage you to keep on waiting on God and wait for His time because He will surely surprise you and do the best for you at the right time!

That's what's been going on and this is how I am looking right now

[By the way, this lovely double hair comb with stretchy beads has made it's way to my top accessories list]

Healthy Hair Challenge 2011 - 2012 : 14 Days On

source

Blessings and love beauties!!

It's been since 14 days since I started my Healthy Hair Challenge. Here's a little recap of what's been going on

● I've washed my hair once since I've started the challeng. I went on a search and destroy spree and I did an overnight rhassoul clay treatment

● I've been styling my hair in "lazy" styles such as updos and I've also been  wearing scarves to keep my hands from my hair

● I've been moisturizing my hair with just water and my leave in conditioner mostly once every two days

● I've been flat twisting my hair in two parts and tucking in the ends and I always wear a satin bonnet to sleep

Here are my observations after the first 14 days :

● Less shedding

● Practically no breakage

I am happy so far with the results I have after these first 14 days. So far, in general, I am happy with the way the Healthy Hair Challenge has been going and I am really expectant about the results to come.

For those of you that have been in this challenge with me, how has it been going? What are your observations?

Hair Update : Best Twist - Outs Ever?

Blessings and love beauties!!

This is another quick hair update to let you know what's been going on with my hair...

After my last wash day, I put in some twists and took them off the day after...
I was really pleased with the results and in fact, I concluded that this has got to be one of the best, if not the best twist - outs I've ever worn!!
I really like the definition and love how moisturized, smooth my hair was and I was really happy at how it wasn't oily or sticky at all!!
I also enjoyed how my hair was so pliable and has so much body and bounce.

I pinned back the right side and created a sort of side parting...

As a natural queen, if you are still battling with some styles and still trying to find the right products and method for them to suit your hair needs and personal preferences, all I can say if just keep on trying! You see, the thing about a natural hair journey is that, you really have to try lots of things before you get to a stage where you have mastered your hair - you know what it likes, you know how to accomplish the styles you want and which products to use at what time
So if you are still trying to get the perfect this or that...keep on trying, you will eventually get there.
As for me, I am still trying to master the styles I like to wear according to my own hair.
This twist - out is definitely a confirmation that I am not so far away anymore!

It was definitely a good twist - out day!!

Would you say you have mastered you hair yet?
What are your staple styles?

Hair Update : First Time Braid - Outs

Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray all is well with you and yours!!

Here's another quick Hair Update...

After doing all the washing last wash day, I decided to try something I've never really tried before :

Braid - outs

Yes, I have never worn a braid out.

I don't know but...I have always preferred twists/ twist - outs ... mainly because of the ease I guess...

So I put in 16 braids put on my satin bonnet scarf and went to bed.

On the next day, I took them down and .... loved it!!

Though I didn't get much definition, I liked the fullness that came with the braid outs and how my hair laid. In fact, I cannot easily wear my hair in this way with twist outs so it was sort of a first time wearing my hair like this...

I like the look a lot and I think I've become a fan of braid - outs but here's what I've learnt about braid - outs :

PROS

● gives a fuller look

● hair lies where you want it to

● stretches hair out more than twists

CONS

● takes about three times longer to do than twists

● takes about four times longer to take out than twists (I was in a hurry that morning so you can imagine...)

● it's harder to achieve good definition

But this was my experience with them and remember, it's my very first time so after playing with it a few more times...I'm sure I'll only master it...though I doubt I'll be getting used to the time it takes to put on and take out any time soon...

I wore this hair do all day and loved every minute of it...I did get some looks but what's new?
By the end of the day, by around 9 pm shrinkage had kicked in and it wasn't looking quite the same anymore ... but either way, that's the nature of my hair so I'm not even considering that!

Do you wear braid - outs?
If so, why are your experiences?
Any tips?

Hair Update : The Side Roll - DatFunkyFro Style!

Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray all is well with you and that you have had a wonderfully blessed  Thursday.

Well...this evening was marked as a day out with the girls on my calendar and as usual, after I'd picked everything I wanted to wear, my hair was the last on my list.

By the time I got to my hair, I was already running late.
I started out with an idea of what I wanted to do with it, but then I had absolutely no clue.
I went from an updo, to a side look, then an updo again before I finally came up with this.
This look had not been planned and looking back now, I laugh because I was practically rushing when I came up with it.

But...

I do like it...a lot!

Though I didn't get any compliment about it, apart from my lovely sister, I did get some major stares!
I really would like to rock this look again.
The simplicity is great and protection for my strands!
A keeper!

I call it my infamous side roll!

The evening was great and I had an amazing time thank God...
So the moral of the story is : we seem to be the most creative when we are lost for ideas and under pressure (pressure to do our hair) [+ roller coasters after teenage years are not so great (my sister learnt this the hard way today)].
I'm also going to take this opportunity to encourage you natural queens to be creative with your natural hair. Time and time again, we get to a spot where we have no clue what to do with our hair and even some sisters start to consider straightening or others...natural hair is so versatile...it's unbelievable
As I always say, if you are not having fun with your natural hair, then you are not informed and let me add this, it also means you are not being creative
It's great to try each other's styles but once in a while, let's bring out the creativity in us
...and this is coming from the chick who practically has zero creativity so if I can do it, so can you!

What are some of your signature styles?

Hair Update : Medium Twists - Outs

Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray all is well with you and yours!

I'm just passing by to bring you all a quick update...

Yesterday was wash day for me ... hours of treating and pampering my hair later, I decided to put in some  medium twists.

I initially did not know what I wanted to do with them - updo or twist outs - but since twists are presently my go to style, I decided to put them in.

To put in the twists, I only used my upcoming OMO OGO Naturals Avocado and Shea Hair Butter (by the grace of God) [so you can consider this as a sneak peek].

This morning, I decided on wearing a twist out.

I really didn't know what to expect because my hair can be a bit unpredictable when it comes to twist outs but I have to say, I am pleased with the results I got :

I pinned the left side back and wore a side bang...

I really like the definition of the twists and the amazing hold!

Are you a twist out diva or a twist queen?

Looks Like A Blow-Out!

Blessings and love beauties!

I pray you have started your week well!

I decided to finally come and tell the part two of my fairy knots story.

As I had planned on that night, the next morning, I tied a scarf over my head and headed to the closest shops to get me some shears but guess what I also got?

A new paddle brush.

I grabbed it because I thought, it would help with detangling the strands and thus reduce the chances of single strand knots.

Alright so I get home and since my hair were in the braided roots twists I decided to work on my hair in these sections. I started by undoing each twist and then I searched out the strands with knots. What a job!! I had to strain my eyes and stand in front of the mirror! Anyway, after spending about one hour alone on the first twist, I decided to try and brush the next section with my new paddle...simply out of curiosity...So for the first time in eight months, I finally used a brush/comb on my hair...and I fell instantly in love with that brush! It smoothed my hair and detangled like nobody's business even on dry hair!! (well my hair had a lot of coconut oil in it so I'm guessing that helped with the dry hair detangling). So before searching out the knotted strands I brushed each section!

Hours, and I mean many hours later of standing and my back aching, I finally finished. I doubt I got every single knot, but I'd certainly done the most part.
After all the brushing, my hair looked like the above picture.

I couldn't get over it. My hair felt so smooth and so detangled - dry! I'm telling you, this brush instantly became my absolutely favorite!

I loved the fro it gave me so much I couldn't help take pictures and I even decided compare it to about a year ago.

Here's the comparison :

I still can't get over just how much it looks like I used a blow dryer in the pictures - which I didn't and I'm not planning on using any time soon. It felt weird though, using a brush after sooo long but I certainly did not regret it. I believe it's time my hair gets reconciled to them.
Right now,  I am not using this brush anymore, but I still love it so, so much! I am also presently working to keep my hair knot free and grow healthy, strong hair!

But why, you ask, why am I not using this brush I love so much anymore?

I don't know if you can see in the picture, but the teeth are made of [very flexible] metal with plastic balls on their ends.

The first time I used this brush on wet hair with conditioner, it worked like a dream! The second time, it did the same thing but the day after that wash day, I found the teeth were rusting (if you look at the picture well enough you'll notice the brown color of some of the teeth)!
I was appalled! I realized it must be my hard water supply since I rinsed it with the water from the tap. I tried everything to clean it (ACV mainly) but I only managed to do it partially. I was so annoyed! I had under estimated just how hard the water supply here is and had never in a million years my great new comb would ever rust!
Anyway, I did not want to take any chances on damaging my hair so I am not using it anymore.

A few days later, I went shopping with my baby sister and I came across the brush again...I was about to pick it up but my baby sister told me to try another brand. After looking through their selection of brushed and combs and after asking the shop attendants for advice I finally decided to buy a brush that looked like a denman brush.

I tried this one today and I was terribly disappointed, the thing could barely move through my hair...Too many [rigid] teeth and hair that's too thick does not equal detangling. I was disappointed because I like the way the teeth of the brush are rubber, without any balls, resistant and a bit flexible. But no, it's not for me. I ended up finger detangling the rest of my hair. I tried one of my old wide tooth combs but no thank you...wide tooth combs are just not my thing, for real.

Stay tuned for my upcoming video about my 8 months without combs/brushes!

This is the conclusion of my knotty situation. I would like to get another great paddle brush some time soon though...
Which combs/brushes do you recommend?
