Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray all is well with you all and you have started your week well.

Some of you might have noticed that I stopped posting for a few days, which is not really me since I try to post at least once a day. I have actually been quite busy, been having a tiring week, both physically and psychologically. I have started the exams I'd mentioned and my heart has just been heavy. But I trust God. He has really been the pillar in my life and has upheld me through. Whatever happens, I know my future is sealed in His hands. THough things might look foggy, I have decided to look to my future through the eyes of faith and abandon the eyes of the flesh. I truly appreciate all your love! Thank you and God bless you!

My primary reason for posting today is to update my Healthy Hair Challenge Guidelines. Yes, I know it starts tomorrow, but I have been having a lot of though over the guidelines I'd set in the original post.
I have reconsidered many things and have decided to adjust the rules. Here are the updated criterion for the challenge :

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Cleansing :

● Shampoo hair every 3 weeks every week with sulfate - free shampoo : to keep the scalp clean

-- I will be using my liquid black soap shampoo

● Do an ACV rinse every 3 weeks every week : to avoid hard water/product build up // cleanse the scalp thoroughly

● Clarify every 9 weeks once a monthto cleanse thoroughly // to strengthen the hair strands

-- I will be alternating between shikakai powder and neutral henna


Treatments :

● Pre - poo every 3 weeks every week : for extra moisture // for a bit of protein

-- I will be using my conditioner and olive oil mix

● Deep condition every 3 weeks  every weekfor moisture // for vital nutrients

-- I will be using my rhassoul clay mix once every 6 weeks twice a month

-- I will also be using bentonite clay once every 9 weeks once a month

● Conditioning every 3 weeks every week : for moisture // detangling

-- I will be detangling with both my fingers and paddle brush

● Tea rinse every 3 weeks  every weekto avoid with excess shedding 


Styling :

● Style by using : leave - in conditioner // hair butters // daily spritz

Wear protective styles at least 5 times a week : buns // two strand twists // flat twists // updos Wear  low manipulation styles with maximum care


Wear scarves/beanie/bonnets/beret at least once a week : to cut down on manipulation Wear scarves, beanies, berets, bonnets on days where there is no style inspiration. DO NOT attempt to manipulate hair without having an idea what to do

Only wear "out" styles maximum once a week : twist outs // braid outs // pin up updos


Miscellanious

● Avoid styles that pull the hair like puffs : to keep edges from breaking // to avoid weakening the hair through tension

● Moisturize hair at least once every two days, especially the ends

● Search and destroy single strand knots/spit ends once every 3 months

-- I will only be using my shears specialized for my hair alone to avoid damaging the hair while cutting off the damaged strands

● Absolutely no heat styling

● Always wash in sections

● Keep hair as stretched as possible : to avoid knotting

I have decided to keep washing my hair every week like U have been doing all Summer because I have realized and recalled that it's not in the washing that causes harm to your hair, but how you wash. In fact, washing the hair and scalp is a very vital part of healthy hair growth and maintenance. Therefore, if I want to grow and keep healthy hair, I should in no way shy away from washing my hair.  My initial reason for deciding to wash every 3 weeks is because of the time it takes me to wash my hair...but I was being lazy in my mind because my wash days have been so much better than they used to be and actually go by faster that before.
I have realized that taking care of the scalp is very important. Not washing means, all the sweat, dirt you accumulate will just sit there and clog your scalp and hinder proper growth. I have realized that, it's not in the number of times you wash your hair but it's really the method applied and methods used. It is even advised to wash the hair more than once (at least shampoo and condition) a week.

I have also decided to not put in the "wear protective styles at least 5 times a week" rule. To tell you the truth, I am not sure how much I can keep up with this rule since I have fallen so in love with my hair being out and always end up missing it after a few days of protective styles. Of course, I will still be opting mostly for styles that protect my ends and all ...
I know what you are all thinking, protective styles grow hair...um no they don't, not really.
Again, it's not the protective styles but how you do them. YOu can protective style and still not retain length depending on how you care for your hair. And you can not protective style and grow healthy hair! Yes, it is possible. I grow weary of the way I used to think and many of us still think sometimes. Protective styles are good, don't get me wrong, I love them but to say they are the key to healthy hair is not exactly true. Check out this post and you'll see what I'm taking about. 
Therefore, I will be experimenting with different styles, but how I care and manipulate my hair is truly the key.
I will be focusing on low manipulation styles and try and be much more gentle when styling.

Another addition is, as the challenge goes on, I will be giving myself little goals, weekly/monthly etc.

Those are the updates for now. I am really excited about starting this challenge!

How often do you deep condition your hair??


My answer? Once every two weeks when I wash my hair.

Your answer? Depends on how dry, brittle and in need of attention your hair is.


  • Deep conditioning is a must! 

    • It is imparitive that you deep condition your hair. Our hair is dry and needs extra moisture. Deep conditioners penetrate in a way that regular conditioners not. They have different properties. 

  • How often you deep condition is up to you!

    • Do you use heat often? You should deep condition once a week

    • Is your hair brittle and dry? You should deep condition once a week

    • Is your hair at a good moisture level? You can use your discretion. Bi-monthly or monthly.

  • Can you deep condition too often?

    • YES! You can weaken the strands if you deep condition too often. 

  • Need help looking for a deep conditioner?

    • Look for something with organic ingredients. Read the labels! You want to beware of these ingredients. Print the list and take it with you.

    • Look for something with things that you know work in your hair- whether it be a type of oil or it contains protein, etc.

    • Take off the top and feel the consistency. Do you prefer lightweight products or thicker masques?

  • What deep conditioner do I currently use?

    • Bioinfusion olive oil deep conditioning treatment

  • How can you get it to penetrate your hair deeply?

    • HEAT!

      • Sit under the hair dryer for an hour while the deep conditioner is in. 

      • Cover your hair with a hot towel and shower cap to seal in heat

      • Use your natural body heat by simply covering your hair with a plastic shower cap

Bronner Brothers: Hair Show Competition

What would a hair show be without the infamous Battle of the Hair Styles? Today I'd like to share with you some snapshots taken of some pretty incredible and creative hair art displayed at the recent Bronner Brother's Show. As you view the pictures, remember that the creations you see before you are unique because they are made with synthetic hair.








Notice the hair-fringed shoes....












My favorite of all the entries. This style represented a butterfly. When the announcer asked the audience if any of them wished to see any of the contestants more closely, everyone shouted out "the butterfly!" As she stood up for the audience, the crowd rushed to her to get a closer look.


These pictures do no justice to how mesmorizing this look was in person. I could not take my eyes off of her. She was spectacular.


She just stood there serene and still while we were in awe of how detailed and original the final presentation looked. Although I didn't stick around to find out, I'm sure this look won the final competition.

Hair Inspiration: "Me = Good Enough", by Jen Lord

hmmm, where to begin??
i've been churning on this post in my mind for a while... like, for a few months really but i've never figured how i would start it. or even what to title it. craziness! it's part informative/part venting/part self-disclosure. funny how being a blogger still doesn't make self-disclosure any more comfortable for me!
ok so, around may of last year i made a rather big decision in my life: i decided that i would no longer chemically straighten / relax my hair. if your hair is nowhere near the excessively curly state that mine's is, you may be thinking, "and the big deal is....?" but to other people, this statement can elicit an audible gasp, an "Are you for real?", a "But why?", etc. see, it's a straight haired girl's world, for the most part. our society is heavily influenced by the european standards of beauty.

the problem is when a large group of people who have tightly curled hair {sorry, i've never been a fan of the word "nappy/knappy"} decide that they need to have straight hair because their hair isn't "good enough" or they do not possess the coveted "good hair" {loosely curled hair}. isn't it odd that my hair is called "natural hair" since i don't chemically straighten it but hair that has been chemically altered is just called "hair"? isn't that backwards?!

so i've pretty much always hated my hair. i've wanted to have hair like the little girl on the box of the Just For Me or PCJ hair relaxer kit, LOL! SOOO many black little girls wanted her hair! but alas, i wasn't born with "good hair" {i CRINGE every time i hear someone use that phrase}.


i've scoffed internally at preachers when they declare that hair is my glory. Glory?! umm... more like Shame! it's not growing so who cares if it's uncut? in actuality my hair was growing BUT it was breaking also so i could never retain length. thus, it never seemed to get any much longer.

so what spurred me?
- i was in a funk last year and i needed change. like, big time major change.  
- i was kinda tired of going to the salon. seriously, i am hightailing it across town to go to your salon and i still have to sit and Wait for you even though i have an appointment? oh, and pay that much? um, no.
- a book i had picked up at west coast conference 2009 by Juli Jasinski called "Her Ebony Glory". i remember scoffing at the book when she began to talk about not relaxing our hair.
- my convictions. yep, i've had this nagging thought for a few years now but never did anything about it: if i shouldn't dye my hair because i'm changing it from my natural color, why should i relax it and change it from its natural texture?

so i took the plunge and let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions i have ever made. God is bringing me closer each and everyday to more self-acceptance. do i love my hair now? i'm getting there.... i'm not in love with my hair but i don't hate it anymore.... in fact, i like it now and THAT, my friends, is one giant leap for mankind. my hair is not bad hair, it is Good Hair because God made it and it was Good Enough for Him.

and besides,  why would anyone argue against  having heathly, strong hair with less breakage and more growth??? all to conform to society's beauty standards.

hair is a hot button issue among some for sure. what prompted me to write this today was a conversation i had last night. "so, you mean you're never relaxing your hair again?" nope. "well, what if you meet a guy and he won't marry you unless you relax your hair?"

um.... if i met a guy and he said, "you know, i really like you but you need to do something about that nose"
should jen run to her laptop and check out if her job's health insurance covers plastic surgery?? noooooo...

see, it's really sad but you'd be shocked to know how many people feel like the person in the above convo.

so, i try to brush off the ignorance. it's all i can do.
after all, i am good enough in His eyes, right?

{ i suppose it would seem fitting that i stick a picture in this post but i don't really have hair pics! and i'm sporting french braids today. so yeah. :) }

The Buzz -This is a super short hair cut.

Faux Hawk - This is good for men who are losing their hair at the temples. This takes the longer hair at the center, and arranges it so it covers your receding hairline.

Textured Crop - This is where your stylist will take shorter hairs and lay them in such a way as to make your hair longer.

The Comb Over - If you are down to this, you can no longer cover up your hair loss. This is where you take the hair on the sides and comb it over the bald area on top. You cannot cover it up; you just draw attention to it.

Hats - It is appropriate for both men and women to wear hats to cover the bald areas. It is appropriate today for men to wear ball caps in most areas, together with some restaurants.

Concealers - These are products that are made of the same stuff that hair is made of. One such product is Toppik. It works by putting microfiber hairs, keratin, on the scalp where the balding occurs, and makes your hair look fuller. I use Toppik and am quite satisfied with it.

Nightly Routine

My nightly routine makes getting ready in the morning so simple.

Here's what I will be doing for the next few weeks:

Spritz Hair with Water
Finger Part hair and apply Aloe Vera Gel mixed with Garlic Oil to decrease shedding ( every other day on scalp)
Moisturize in Sections
Seal with Grapeseed Oil
Put hair in 2 braids
Pin Braids Up
Place Scarf on head
Place Plastic Cap over scarf - If I feel like my hair is oily and will stain my pillow case


When I wake up in the AM, I can either:
Remove braids for a soft crimpy braid out look
                           OR
Slick down edges/tie with a scarf and place braids in a clip or small bun, remove scarf when I get in car


I have been doing the latter for the past 2 days.

Update- My Hair

So..I went ahead and relaxed my hair this past weekend (16 weeks post relaxer) and once again was left underprocessed(not texlaxed). I swear I'm starting to think my hair is getting too strong for these relaxers!(blame it on the biotin and not using heat AT all)  Total smoothing and application time was 27 minutes which is a little over the recommended time and the relaxer still didn't take well.
 I was contemplating going to a stylist from way back when to do a corrective when I'm 8 weeks post...but I'll see how it goes. I'm kind of used to this underprocessing thing and my hair has gotten thicker because of it.
The last 4 months of the year, I am going extremely "hard" with my haircare because this is the LAST year I actively grow my hair out...so waiting for a touch-up may not be difficult for me since I will be in protective styles.
I think I MAY flat-iron my hair in October (if I don't get a touch-up) for a length check, so we'll have to wait until then for pics.

Okay...so I Lost almost NO hair during this relaxer process and I think it's because of these 3 things:

1.) After Neutralizing with the Shampoo, I did an Apple Cidar Vinegar rinse to balance the PH levels in my hair.

Verse Of The Week : You Are Much More Than You Know


"When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, 'The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.' "

- Judges 6 : 12



This is our portion of scripture for this week.

We all know the story of Gideon : how God used him to deliver the Israelites.

Don't you wonder why the angel called Gideon "mighty warrior"?

It's amazing, how the angel already called Gideon what he was later going to be (in delivering Israel) even before Gideon himself knew about his future task. The angel did not say to Gideon, "hey Gideon, you weakling" or anything of the sort.

Doesn't this make you wonder?

This only means one thing : God does not see us for what we are, but rather, He sees our future and sees what we are going to be. Do not under estimate yourselves like Gideon did (“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” Judges 6 : 15) but rather, we should see ourselves like God sees us. 
This is the trouble with many of us these days and this attitude greatly impedes our progress.
Instead of looking forward and seeing ourselves through the eyes of God, we see the past and weaknesses. We remember all our wrong doings and wrong choices and look at out present mis- happenings. 
We cannot press forward with this kind of mind set. God does not see you weaknesses or your past but He looks into your future and calls you by what you could be if you would just let Him transform you and work through you.

The other thing to hold on from this verse is that the angel told Gideon "The Lord is with you". That was the first the angel told Gideon. Of course, Gideon asked questions (“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” Judges 6 : 13).

Don't we do the same thing? We ask, Lord where are you? Why is this happening? I know I have asked such questions before but the angel said to Gideon, even before anything else "the Lord is with you". What an awesome report to hear. Even before gideon voiced His questions, the angel already countered them with his statement. It's the same thing with us today, God wants us to know He is with us, even when the situation and circumstances say otherwise. He knows we are concerned and worried, but He wants you to know He is with you.

Don't try to understand God or figure Him out with your finite minds...He is infinite and even when we feel nothing is right and that God is nowhere to be seen, He is right there, with you, in that storm, in that tragedy or whatever it is. 

Another thing to note is that to be able to deliver the Israelites and change their situation, Gideon had to look beyond his weaknesses and background...He had to accept he was truly a "mighty warrior". That means, before the deliverance could take place in reality, it had to have taken place in Gideon's mind.

It's the same thing with us.

Before we can break free from our situations and let God truly work in our lives, we need to get that deliverance in our minds first and see ourselves as God sees us as if we had already overcome whatever we might be going through.
You've got to let go of your past, of your pains, of your weaknesses, of your short comings...God cannot work in your life with all those hanging over your head. You need to be mentally transformed by Him and realize all those things are passed away, they do not matter to God. He has forgiven you after you asked for forgiveness and as long as He is concerned, He has forgotten them ever since. ( "as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." Psalms 103 : 12).

God wants to move in you and through you. You just need to let go of all that negativity and past, stop questioning God and look forward and begin to see yourself as He sees you.

Fear not, He is with you and He will always be. (So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" Isaiah 41 : 10).


May God help us to let go and see ourselves as He sees us.

 My father gave me a daily devotion book that I absolutely adore. It is just the right thing I need to start  my morning and I learn so much about the Bible and even about myself when reading it.
Todays devotion was focused on negative thinking.... How negative thinking leads to negative results/negative people. 
So, let go of all negative thoughts! Don't say "my life stinks because of this, that and whatever". Thank God that he gave you another day to change what you don't like about your life. I know we heard this saying so many times " You can do anything you put your mind to". It is so true. The author gave an example; When she thinks of icecream all day, later on she sees herself in a car driving to get some icecream. So if you want something, whatever it may be, put your faith in God and YOURSELF and KNOW you will get it!

Went to the fair

Matt & I went to the Oregon State Fair on Saturday and had a great time. We drove go-karts, visited the booths, looked at lots of cute animals, went to the petting zoo (I got to pet a wallaby!), ate lots of yummy food and played some games.

Do Megan Fox and Other Celebs Ever Really Get Rid of Those Tattoos?

Megan Fox says she's getting rid of her Marilyn Monroe tattoo. But whenever I see photos of a celebrity's "removed" tat, it's still pretty clear. Megan is stuck with Marilyn forever, isn't she?



Indeed, these days we aren't seeing the full bombshell on Fox's arm, but rather a faded one, like a photo of Marilyn that's been left out in the sun. Is that really what passes for tattoo removal? I found out. I also found out why so many stars are really getting their ink blasted. The intel may surprise you, because, heck, it surprised me ...



Fox, of course, isn't the first star to try removing or altering a tat. Angelina Jolie famously removed a tattoo of ex Billy Bob Thornton and replaced the image with a tribute to her children. Paris Hilton went through laser removal to get rid of a tattoo honoring ex Nick Carter. Charlie Sheen got Denise Richards' name removed from his wrist. As for Fox, she says she's removing the Marilyn ink because it conjures "negative" energy.



"I'm removing it," Fox told Italian magazine Amica. "It is a negative character, as she suffered from personality disorders and was bipolar. I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life." (As for why she got it in the first place, I have that, too: ""It warns me not to let myself be treated so badly by the film industry so that it breaks me down."The results of Fox's removal efforts seem almost wasted. After all, in the most recent photos, we still, clearly, can see a Marilyn on Fox's arm. In fact, rarely do we ever see photos of a celeb tattoo that has been removed with complete success. So does that mean that a tattoo is totally forever?



No. According to Ian Kirby of the Beverly Hills-based removal practice Dr. Tattoff, what you're seeing isn't a before or after, but rather, somewhere in between. Too often, when we see a paparazzi photo celebrity's tattoo "removed," what we're really seeing is a star's body in the middle of the slow process of nixing it.



During a proper removal procedure, "the laser comes in like a hammer and smashes the ink pigment, allowing your body's immune system to more easily take it away," Kirby explains. "Your body does half the work in removing a tattoo that way."



In other words, that faded Marilyn we're seeing? Those are blasted, weakened bits of ink that Fox's own body is now working to finish off. Eventually, Kirby predicts, "it seems like she'll probably see a full removal" of the image.



As for why Fox is really removing the image in the first place, sure, maybe she doesn't want all that "negativity" around. And, yes, a lot of stars remove the tats after a breakup. But here's another reason that you may not know: Stars hate sitting in a makeup chair. Kirby says that many of the celebs who use Dr. Tattoff tell the doctors there that they want to decrease their time in that makeup chair, so they're getting their tats, well, off.

Megan Fox may be losing her Marilyn Monroe tattoo, but she says she's been trying to gain weight. The actress was spotted in brown leather shorts and a black tank top on the set of her new movie This is Forty looking curvier than she had in the past.

“People thought, ‘Oh she must be anorexic,’ but she’s far from that,” her trainer Harley Pasternak said. “Believe it or not she has this really fast metabolism, so her training is all about body toning and sculpting. With her it's really about whether she's eating enough of the right things.”



In fact, he said she “gets frustrated at times” because she needs to put on weight.



The Jennifer’s Body actress recently told the Italian magazine Amica that she put on weight after she quit her strict vegan diet.



"For a year and a half, until about four months ago, I followed a strict vegan diet based on raw fruits and vegetables, no bread, sugar and coffee," she said. "But I had lost too much weight. So now I eat a bit of everything. I train three times a week doing circuit training with my trainer Harvey Pasternak."Fox also confessed to Fox News she didn’t have the healthiest diet.



"I just stopped eating," Fox said. "I don’t eat very healthy anyway — I have a serious sugar tooth, so now I eat red-velvet cake before I go to bed every night, and if you eat meals later, you'll put on weight faster, so I had dinner at 10 p.m."



The 25-year-old actress revealed she also had to put on weight back in 2008 for Transformers director Michael Bay. “I'd lost a lot of weight and got really scrawny but I was told I had to put on a size for Transformers because Michael doesn't like skinny girls."

Newsflash for inkheads and readers of lad mags: Megan Fox is removing one of her tattoos. (By removing, I think she means someone will scrape her skin off and then graft new skin on, which will be painful and not even work really—but whatev.) The tattoo she hopes to get rid of is a portrait of Marilyn Monroe. She told the Italian women’s magazine Amica that Monroe is “a negative character, as she suffered from personality disorders and was bipolar. I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life.”



I’m guessing that’s not exactly what she said. I think she said something in English, it got translated for Amica into Italian, and that Italian version got translated back into English for websites like CelebrityGossip.com. (Just flexing those attenuated translation-studies muscles.)Even taking strained translation into account, we can assume this: She’s getting rid of the tattoo because she feels having bipolar disorder brings negativity. (Side note: I’m not sure who she thought Marilyn Monroe was when she got the tattoo. I mean, it’s not like she was Susan Sontag or something. She was famous for being damaged and dying tragically. Bipolar disorder would have been the least of her problems.)



Fortunately, I have some advice for Megan Fox that, should she choose to follow it, may obviate the need for this painful procedure.

Movie fans in Scottsdale are waiting for the next release from Judd Apatow, This is 40. The film starring Megan Fox, Leslie Mann, and Paul Rudd is set for release in June 2012. On Tuesday Celeb Buzz shared the latest photos of Megan Fox from the set of the film.



This is 40 has been in production for a few weeks now. It isn't clear what role Fox plays in the film because details about her character have been kept under wraps. Rudd did have this to say to E! Online about his co-star recently though:



"Megan is hilarious. I don't know if people don't realize that, but she is really really funny."This is 40 is a sequel of sorts to Apatow's Knocked Up. Rudd and Mann's characters were minor to that film, but in this film they have the spotlight.
